Administrative History | Charles Samuel Keene, illustrator, was born in London in 1823. Having been schooled in London and Ipswich, Keene was first apprenticed to an architect and then to Whympers, the wood-engravers. His early work included illustrations for 'The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe' (1847) and contributions to the 'Illustrated London News'. Keene's long association with 'Punch' began in 1851 and lasted until 1890. The emphasis of his illustrations in 'Punch' was social, rather than political. A collection of his work for 'Punch' was published as 'Our People' in 1881. Keene also contributed to 'Once a Week', a sister paper of 'Punch'. In addition to his illustrations, Keene worked as an etcher from the 1870s. Keene died in 1891. |
