Administrative History | Graham Sutherland was born in 1903 in London. He spent some time as an engineering apprentice, but attended Goldsmiths' College from 1921-1926, where he specialized in etching and engraving. He held his first one-man show in 1925 and was elected to the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers in the same year. In 1926 he converted to Roman Catholicism. Following the collapse of the print market in 1929, he designed posters, china, glass and fabrics. He also began painting and taught at Chelsea School of Art. During the 1930s he regularly visited the West Country and Pembrokeshire, with his wife Kathleen. In 1936 he exhibited in the International Surrealist Exhibition. Between 1940 and 1945 he was an official war artist, recording bomb damage to buildings and mining and quarrying in Wales and Cornwall. In 1944 he completed his first religious commission, 'Crucifixion', for St. Matthew's Church, Northampton. In 1950-1 he painted the 'Origins of the Land' for the Festival of Britain. In 1952 he designed a tapestry of 'Christ the Redeemer Enthroned in Glory in the Tetramorph', for the new Coventry Cathedral. From 1955 Sutherland lived much of the year near Menton, in France. He died in 1980. |
