| Description | Yaqub is a second year BA (hons) fine art painting student at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is pursuing research into contemporary Asian/Black art in Britain for her final year dissertation. She has felt 'very isolated' as the only Asian woman in her department, and become more determined to promote non-white artists 'as they too have a great deal to offer the growing multi-cultural British society'.
She is interested in the themes behind the work of Himid and Maud Sulter. She is experimenting with ways of portraying the Asian woman's identity and tackling stereotypes of the Western viewer, but has had very little tutorial support and found little resource material about other artists in her situation. She asks Himid for information about her work, teaching practice, beliefs, and theories. She requests contact details for the artists Sutapa Biswas, Mona Hatoum, Zarina Bhimji, and Sonia Boyce, and information about Sulter's talk at forthcoming conference at Nottingham Trent University.
Yaqub's 'business card' is affixed.
Himid notes that she forwarded catalogues of 'Beach house' and 'Revenge'. |
