| Administrative History | The charity was founded in 1987 when Sir Edwin and Lady Manton created the American Fund for the Tate Gallery, a restricted endowment to acquire works of art from North and South America for presentation to Tate. In 1994 American Friends of the Tate Gallery and the American Fellows of the Tate Gallery were brought together to form the American Patrons as part of the Fund. In March 2013 the American Fund was renamed the Tate Americas Foundation to reflect its broader remit. |
