Administrative HistoryOnce the restoration of the Tate after the war had been finished in 1953, the staff and Trustees asked for the building to be completed so as to provide space for temporary exhibitions and for the permanent collection. Between 1957 and 1969 several schemes were proposed and rejected, including one to place a new extension at the front of the gallery and remove the portico. Objections by the Greater London Council and the public led to the abandonment of this scheme. The North East Quadrant extension finally opened to the public in 1979.
