Administrative HistoryFounded in 1934 the British Council exists, under the terms of its charter (1940), to promote greater understanding, awareness and knowledge of Britain and the English language abroad. The Council operates British art exhibitions and visits overseas, and holds a large collection that has been growing since 1948.
