DescriptionInscribed to the right of the design in ink: 'S. Martin - According to the Golden Legend by Jaques de Voragine (XIII Century) - Martin as a youth was a Roman soldier in Gaul in the IV Century. At the age of 18 he gave half his cloak to a naked beggar at the gate of Amiens. That night he saw in a vision Christ wearing the cloak and saying "Martin, yet but a catechumen, gace me this." Shortly afterwards he was baptised; and he left the army at the age of 20. Subsequently he was for many years bishop of Tours, where he died at the age of 81. In representing the Sain in Roman armour I have had in mind Ephesians VI-II (et seq')'
