Administrative HistoryBern Schwartz (1914-1978) was an American businessman who turned to portrait photography at the age of sixty. He trained under Antony di Gesu and the celebrated 'Life' magazine photographer Philippe Halsman. Often assisted by his wife Ronny, Bern's sitters included politicians, diplomats, religious leaders, writers, philanthropists, scientists, actors, dancers, artists and royalty. His portrait of newsreader Angela Rippon featured on the cover of the 'Sunday Times Magazine', while a book of his photographs was published just before his death in 1978. His portraits were exhibited at the Colnaghi Gallery, London (1977), National Portrait Gallery (2008-2009), and at the Mishkenot Sh’ananim and the Naggar School, Jerusalem (2012). Schwartz's archive is held by the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford.
